Milan (askanews) – In the end, Fritz emerged victorious. Out of the 10 thousand name suggestions put forth, “Fritz” prevailed as the chosen name for the polar bear cub born last November at Tierpark Zoo in Berlin. This event marked a decade after the birth of Knut the bear and six years after the tragic loss that deeply impacted Germany. Berlin’s bears, which also feature in the city’s coat of arms, hold a special place in the hearts of its residents. It’s easy to imagine the delight that filled the city when, on November 3, 2016, mother Tonja gave birth to two cubs. Although one of the cubs sadly passed away after a few days, all attention from the zoo and the city swiftly shifted to the surviving cub, Fritz.
